HydraFacial vs Medi-Facial: Understanding the Difference and When to Choose Each
Both are professional facials, but one is device-based and the other is customized by hand. A dermatologist explains when each is appropriate.
"Should I get a HydraFacial or a medi-facial?" is one of the most common questions I hear. Both are professional facial treatments, but they work differently and are suited to different situations.
What Is a HydraFacial?
HydraFacial is a branded, device-based treatment that uses a patented vortex suction technology to simultaneously cleanse, extract, and hydrate the skin. The device creates a vortex effect that dislodges and removes impurities from pores while delivering hydrating serums.
The standard HydraFacial protocol has 3 steps:
- Cleanse + Peel: Gentle exfoliation with a glycolic/salicylic acid solution
- Extract + Hydrate: Vortex suction removes debris from pores while delivering hyaluronic acid and other hydrating serums
- Fuse + Protect: Application of antioxidants, peptides, and growth factors
Duration: 30โ45 minutes Downtime: None โ you leave with glowing skin immediately Frequency: Monthly for maintenance
HydraFacial strengths:
- Consistent, standardized results every time (device-controlled parameters)
- No downtime โ perfect pre-event treatment
- Comfortable โ the vortex suction is not painful
- Immediately visible improvement in skin hydration and brightness
- Safe for all skin types including sensitive skin
HydraFacial limitations:
- Superficial treatment โ does not address deep skin concerns (scars, significant pigmentation)
- Temporary results without regular maintenance
- Cannot be customized as deeply as a medi-facial
- More expensive than basic facials due to device cost and disposable tips
What Is a Medi-Facial?
A medi-facial (medical facial) is a customized, multi-step facial treatment designed by a dermatologist or trained aesthetician based on your specific skin concerns. Unlike HydraFacial, which follows a standardized device protocol, medi-facials are manually performed and can be tailored in real-time.
A typical medi-facial at Vernon may include:
- Deep cleansing: Based on skin type โ enzyme-based for sensitive, salicylic for oily
- Steaming or galvanic current: To soften pores before extraction
- Manual extraction: Trained extraction of comedones (blackheads/whiteheads)
- Chemical peel or enzyme mask: Chosen specifically for your concern
- Active ingredient infusion: Via sonophoresis, iontophoresis, or manual massage
- LED light therapy: Red (collagen), blue (anti-bacterial), or combination
- Cooling mask and SPF application
Duration: 45โ75 minutes Downtime: Minimal โ possible mild redness from extractions Frequency: Every 3โ4 weeks
Medi-facial strengths:
- Fully customizable to your exact skin concerns
- Can incorporate therapeutic ingredients (retinol, vitamin C, niacinamide) at concentrations not available in HydraFacial cartridges
- More thorough manual extraction than vortex suction
- Can be combined with LED therapy, sonophoresis, or other modalities
- Generally more affordable than HydraFacial
Medi-facial limitations:
- Quality depends heavily on the skill of the aesthetician
- Manual extraction can cause temporary redness or bruising
- Results vary more between sessions compared to device-based treatments
When I Recommend HydraFacial
- Before an event (wedding, party, photoshoot): Guaranteed glow with zero downtime
- First-time facial patients: Gentle, comfortable introduction to professional skincare
- Sensitive skin: The device-controlled parameters minimize human error
- Maintenance between more intensive treatments: Monthly HydraFacial between laser or peel sessions
When I Recommend Medi-Facials
- Active acne: Medi-facials can incorporate anti-acne ingredients and thorough extraction
- Specific pigmentation concerns: Customized peels and serums target your exact issue
- Budget-conscious regular care: More affordable for ongoing monthly treatments
- Combination with other modalities: LED therapy, oxygen infusion, or microcurrent can be incorporated
The Combination Approach
Many of my patients alternate:
- HydraFacial one month (hydration and maintenance)
- Customized medi-facial the next month (targeted treatment)
This provides the consistency and hydration of HydraFacial with the targeted therapeutic benefits of customized medi-facials.
What Facials Cannot Do
No facial โ HydraFacial or medi-facial โ can:
- Remove deep acne scars (need MNRF, subcision, or laser)
- Permanently remove pigmentation (need laser, peels, or topical agents)
- Replace daily skincare routine (facials are supplementary, not foundational)
- Tighten significantly loose skin (need HIFU, threads, or RF)
Facials improve skin quality, hydration, and surface-level concerns. They are maintenance treatments that complement, not replace, targeted medical procedures.
