Clinical Dermatology
Surgical removal of sebaceous cysts, epidermoid cysts, lipomas, and other subcutaneous lumps. Minimal-scar technique by trained surgeon.
Cysts and lipomas are common benign lumps that develop under the skin. While they are not dangerous, they can be cosmetically bothersome, uncomfortable, or continue to grow if left untreated.
Types of lumps treated at Vernon:
Sebaceous cysts: Develop from blocked sebaceous glands. They contain a cheesy, foul-smelling material (keratin) and can become infected and painful. Complete removal requires excision of the entire cyst wall to prevent recurrence.
Epidermoid cysts: Similar to sebaceous cysts but originate from the epidermis. Often appear on the face, neck, and trunk. Surgical excision with complete capsule removal is the definitive treatment.
Lipomas: Benign fatty tumors that grow slowly under the skin. They are soft, mobile, and painless. While they don't require removal for medical reasons, many patients choose excision for cosmetic reasons or discomfort.
Dermoid cysts: Congenital cysts that may contain hair, skin, and other tissue. Often found near the eyebrow or midline. Surgical excision is recommended.
Our surgical approach: With doctors trained in General Surgery and Minimal Access Surgery, our team uses techniques that prioritize minimal scarring:
1. Minimal incision technique: The incision is made as small as possible โ often smaller than the cyst itself. The cyst is carefully dissected from surrounding tissue and delivered through the small opening intact.
2. Complete capsule removal: The entire cyst wall/capsule is removed. Incomplete removal (often from "squeeze and drain" techniques at non-surgical clinics) leads to recurrence rates of 40โ60%.
3. Layered closure: The wound is closed in layers with fine absorbable sutures internally and skin closure techniques that minimize visible scarring.
4. Histopathological examination: All excised lumps are sent for pathological examination to confirm they are benign. This is standard surgical practice and important for patient safety.
